Stand-Up India Scheme: How Women Entrepreneurs Are Building Businesses Without Collateral

Breaking the First Barrier: Access to Credit

For many aspiring women entrepreneurs, the biggest challenge isn’t the idea—it’s funding. Not venture capital, not scaling capital—but the very first push: a loan to start. Traditional banking systems have often made this difficult, especially for first-time founders without collateral or credit history.

This is exactly the gap the Stand-Up India Scheme was designed to solve.

Launched in 2016, Stand-Up India is more than a loan scheme—it’s a movement to empower women and underrepresented communities to take their first step into entrepreneurship. It shifts the narrative from “lack of access” to “structured opportunity.”

What Is the Stand-Up India Scheme?

At its core, Stand-Up India is a government-backed initiative that provides collateral-free loans ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore to women and SC/ST entrepreneurs. The focus is clear: support greenfield enterprises, meaning completely new businesses rather than expansions of existing ones.

    The scheme covers sectors like:

    • Manufacturing
    • Services
    • Trading
    • Agri-allied businesses

What makes it powerful is its scale and intent. Every bank branch across India is mandated to support at least one woman entrepreneur and one SC/ST borrower—ensuring that access to funding is not limited to metro cities or privileged networks.

Why This Scheme Matters for Women

Let’s be honest—starting a business is not just about passion. It’s about risk, financial backing, and belief. For women, especially first-time founders, these barriers are often higher.

Stand-Up India directly addresses these challenges:

    • No Collateral Required:Removes one of the biggest hurdles in securing loans
    • Structured Funding:Covers up to 85% of the project cost
    • Inclusive Design:Ensures women are actively prioritized

The impact is already visible. Over 80% of loans sanctioned under the scheme have gone to women entrepreneurs, signaling a strong shift toward inclusive growth.

Loan Features That Actually Empower Founders

Unlike generic loan products, Stand-Up India is designed with startup realities in mind.

    • Loan Amount:₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore
    • Collateral-Free Funding:Backed by Credit Guarantee schemes
    • Repayment Tenure:Up to 7 years, with a moratorium period
    • Interest Rates:Linked to bank base rates, making it accessible
    • Margin Requirement:Only 10–15% promoter contribution

This structure ensures that founders can focus on building their business rather than worrying about immediate financial pressure.

    Who Can Apply?

The scheme is tailored for first-time entrepreneurs who are ready to build something from the ground up.

    Eligibility includes:

    • Women or SC/ST individuals aged 18 and above
    • First-time business owners launching a greenfield project
    • At least 51% ownership and control in the business
    • No history of loan defaults

It’s important to note that the scheme does not support speculative ventures or expansions. The focus is on new, scalable, and productive businesses.

How to Apply: A Simple, Structured Process

The application process is designed to be accessible, even for first-time founders.

    1. Register on the Stand-Up India portal (standupmitra.in)
    2. Submit your business plan or project report
    3. Choose a preferred bank branch
    4. Undergo evaluation and approval
    5. Track your application digitally through the portal

Banks like SBI, HDFC, and Union Bank actively participate, ensuring wide coverage across the country.

Beyond funding, the scheme also provides handholding support, including training, mentorship, and guidance through initiatives like Srujan Sangam.

Real Impact: From First Loan to First Business

The numbers tell a compelling story. By March 2025:

    • ₹61,000+ crorein loans have been sanctioned
    • 8 lakh+ entrepreneurshave benefited
    • A majority of beneficiaries are women

But the real impact goes beyond numbers.

It’s the story of a woman launching her first manufacturing unit.
    It’s a founder opening a service-based startup in a tier-2 city.
It’s a dream that moved from idea to execution because funding was finally accessible.

How It Fits Into India’s Larger Startup Ecosystem

Stand-Up India doesn’t operate in isolation—it’s part of a larger ecosystem of support for entrepreneurs.

While schemes like SISFS help validate ideas and programs like the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) enable scaling, Stand-Up India plays a critical role at the very beginning of the journey.

It complements global initiatives like the Google Women Founders Fund by offering debt-based capital, ensuring founders have multiple funding avenues—from grants to loans to venture capital.

This layered support system is what makes India’s startup ecosystem stronger and more inclusive.

    Challenges That Still Need Attention

While the scheme has made significant progress, challenges remain:

    • Limited awareness in smaller towns and rural areas
    • Difficulty in preparing detailed project reports
    • Hesitation among first-time entrepreneurs to approach banks

However, with increasing digital access and awareness campaigns, these barriers are gradually being addressed.

The Future: More Women, More Businesses, More Impact

India is at a turning point. More women than ever are stepping into entrepreneurship—not just as participants, but as leaders.

Schemes like Stand-Up India are accelerating this shift by making funding more accessible, structured, and inclusive.

As more women build businesses, they are not just creating income—they are creating jobs, communities, and long-term economic impact.

Final Thought: Your First Step Matters

For the Poise Instyle reader, this is more than a government scheme—it’s an opportunity.

You don’t need to wait for investors.
You don’t need to have everything figured out.

Sometimes, all you need is the first step—and the right support system.

    Stand-Up India gives you both.

Because the future of entrepreneurship in India isn’t just about startups—
it’s about women who choose to stand up and build.
